Giovanni da Maiano (born in Caversago near Milan), born was Giovanni di Jacopo di Guido da Caversago, can be traced historically from 1346 to 1369. He worked primarily in Florence and was summoned to Rome by the pope in 1348. He apparently received his artistic training in Lombardy, and his work was also influenced by Tuscan and Florentine art. As one of the few painters in Florence, he further developed the innovations made by grotto. Significant works by the artist include Altarpiece, c. 1363, Museo Comunale, Prato; Pieta, 1365, Galleria dell' Academia, Florence; and Scenes from the Lives of the Virgin and Mary Magdalene, 1365, San Croce, Florence.
